Buffalo Mountain Lodge sits on Tunnel Mountain Road, a five-minute drive from the Banff townsite but enough removed to feel genuinely separate from it. The log construction and the forested setting are not affectations. The property was built to look like it belongs on a mountain and it does. Elk graze on the grounds in early morning.
The rooms have fireplaces, timber ceilings, and the kind of quiet that Banff Ave hotels cannot offer regardless of soundproofing. The Prow restaurant is the best reason to make the drive up even if you are not staying. The kitchen sources locally and runs a menu that changes with the season. It is one of the more serious dining rooms in Banff and often overlooked because it requires a car to reach.
The trade-off is the requirement to drive into town for anything. If your plan involves drinking with dinner, factor in the cab back or plan to stay put. The shuttle into Banff runs on a schedule so check it before you book.
