The Mount Royal has been on Banff Ave at the corner of Caribou since 1908 and has outlasted every trend in mountain town hospitality. The building has the presence of a property that earned its place rather than bought it. Rooms are compact by modern standards, which is the honest trade-off for staying in a century-old building on the main street, but the location makes the compromise worthwhile.

You can walk to every restaurant, shop, and trailhead in Banff without getting in a car. The Cascade Lounge on the ground floor draws a reliable after-ski crowd and runs a decent cocktail menu. The price point is generally lower than comparable downtown properties which makes it the smart mid-range choice for travellers who plan to spend most of their time outside.

Request an upper floor room facing Banff Ave for the view toward Cascade Mountain. The rooms on the Caribou Street side are quieter if you plan to sleep past 7am on a summer morning.
