Anejo on Banff Ave brings a genuinely good Mexican program to a town where it is not the obvious fit, and the restaurant has built a loyal following by taking the cuisine seriously rather than defaulting to Tex-Mex approximations. The tacos use proper masa tortillas made in-house and the fillings are built around central Mexican flavours.
The al pastor and the carnitas are the benchmarks. The mezcal and tequila program is the most serious spirits list in Banff outside of PARK Distillery. The margaritas are built properly from fresh citrus and good agave spirit.
The room is lively and the noise level on a busy evening is the price of admission for the energy. No reservations accepted which means the wait on a summer weekend can be significant. Arrive before 6pm or after 9pm to avoid the worst of it. Worth the wait regardless.
