The Lake Agnes Tea House sits at 7,005 feet above sea level and is accessible only by the 3.4-kilometre trail from the Chateau Lake Louise parking lot. The elevation gain is about 400 metres. The tea house has been serving hikers since 1905 and the format has not changed much.
Soup, sandwiches, baked goods, and tea made over a propane stove in a log cabin perched above a glacial lake with the Big Beehive on one side and the Devil's Thumb on the other. There is no electricity and no running water. The staff carry everything up on their backs. The prices reflect this and they should.
The wait for a table on a summer afternoon is real. The experience of earning lunch by hiking to it and then eating it at 7,000 feet is the product being sold. The Plain of Six Glaciers Tea House is further and higher and has better views of the glaciers if you want to extend the commitment.
