LUPO strips away the tourist trap energy that plagues most Banff restaurants. You'll find genuine Italian cooking executed with restraint and respect for ingredients. The kitchen sources what it can locally and doesn't pretend to be something it isn't. This is where locals eat when they want a real meal instead of views and mediocrity.
Order the handmade pasta. The chef rotates seasonal shapes and sauces, so what's on the menu when you visit matters. Game meats appear frequently in fall and winter. The wine list leans Italian but includes thoughtful Canadian selections. Book a table upstairs in the dining room if you want quiet conversation. The bar downstairs gets louder but offers better people-watching on Wolf Street.
Dinner reservations are essential, especially weekends from June through September. Expect a small room with limited seating. This isn't a drawback if you like the idea of a place that stays full without needing to be expansive. Come in shoulder season (May or September) if you want the food without crowds. Skip July entirely. It's genuinely good enough to warrant timing around.
