The Magpie and Stump on Caribou Street is the unpretentious Mexican option in Banff and it has been filling that role reliably for years. The setup is casual and the prices are honest. The tacos and burritos are made with care rather than assembled from a steam table.
The margaritas are strong enough to notice and cheap enough to order a second. The room is small and fills fast on weekend evenings without warning. The Magpie does not make reservations and does not need to. You either get a table or you come back in an hour.
The trade-off versus Anejo is atmosphere and ambition. Anejo is trying to be a destination Mexican restaurant. The Magpie is trying to be the best casual Mexican option in a mountain town and succeeds at that goal consistently.
