Book a guided tour if you want bear awareness and river knowledge, or rent a canoe solo if you prefer silence. They outfit you with paddles, life jackets, and current conditions briefing. Their guided tours run 1.5 to 3 hours depending on your fitness and interests. Single kayaks are also available if you want more stability than a canoe.

Go in early morning before cruise-ship crowds arrive in town, ideally May through September. The trade-off: the Bow River moves year-round but water temperatures stay cold through June, so dress in layers. Skip this in July and August unless you book early. This suits paddlers comfortable with moving water who want to see elk and osprey without the alpine lake traffic.
