The Banff Upper Hot Springs pool has been operating in one form or another since 1886, making it one of the oldest continuously operated attractions in the national parks system. The naturally heated water comes from deep in Sulphur Mountain and arrives at the pool at temperatures between 37 and 40 degrees Celsius.
The outdoor pool sits at an elevation that gives you views toward Tunnel Mountain and the surrounding peaks while you float. In summer the pool is busy but manageable. In winter it is one of the more memorable experiences in Banff. Snow falling into hot mineral water with the mountains around you is the kind of thing that sounds like a postcard and turns out to be exactly that in practice.
Towel and bathing suit rental are available at the facility. Arrive early in the day or late in the afternoon to avoid the midday peak. The entrance price is reasonable relative to the experience.
