The Banff Gondola covers the 700-metre vertical to the summit of Sulphur Mountain in eight minutes, which makes it the most efficient way to access genuine alpine terrain from the Banff townsite. The eight-person cabins run continuously from early morning until evening.
The summit boardwalk along the ridge connects to the historic cosmic ray station at the far end, which was operated by the University of Chicago from 1957 to 1978 and is now a National Historic Site. The science is interesting if you read the interpretive panels rather than walking past them. The views on a clear day cover the Bow Valley in both directions and extend to five distinct mountain ranges.
On a cloudy or overcast day the experience is fundamentally different and the ticket price becomes harder to justify. Check the conditions before going. Sky Bistro at the summit is a legitimate dining option if you want to combine the gondola visit with a meal. Northern Lights is the casual alternative at the same elevation.
