Bow Falls is where the Bow River drops 10 meters over a rocky ledge, and it's the most accessible waterfall in Banff. You can reach it in 10 minutes from the town center on foot, which explains why you'll find it crowded most days. The falls matter because they're genuinely powerful despite their modest height, and the spray and roar feel earned rather than hype.
Walk the short trail from the Bow Falls parking lot and you'll stand right at the lip where the river plunges. In spring and early summer when snowmelt peaks, the volume of water is genuinely impressive. The viewpoint sits on a slight rise with decent views upstream and downstream. You can also access it from Spray Avenue if you're coming from the town side, adding flexibility to your route.
Visit in May or June when flow is highest and crowds are still manageable. Skip this in mid-July through August unless you enjoy waiting for photos. The trade-off is obvious: it's convenient and dramatic, but you're rarely alone. Go early morning or late afternoon if you're visiting peak season. This works best if you're already in town and want a quick, genuine encounter with the Bow River rather than a wilderness hike.
