This is your official visitor center, and it's actually useful. The staff here knows the park inside out and can answer questions that Google can't, especially about trail conditions, wildlife sightings, and which areas are dealing with overcrowding on any given day. They'll point you toward experiences that match your fitness level and interests, not just the obvious ones.
Pick up detailed maps, reserve backcountry permits, and grab current information on avalanche forecasts and seasonal closures. The center stocks guidebooks, local business cards, and trail reports updated daily. Staff can book accommodations across the region if you're scrambling for a last-minute place to sleep. They also have insider knowledge on lesser-known hikes and which viewpoints are mobbed in peak season.
Visit early in the morning before the tour bus crowds arrive, or go in shoulder seasons (May or September) when you'll actually have time to chat with staff. The center gets swamped from July through August, and you'll spend more time waiting than learning. This matters most if you're planning backcountry trips or arriving without a detailed itinerary. Skip it if you've already researched everything online and just need a place to confirm your reservations.
