Take the gondola up Sunshine Mountain for unobstructed views across the Continental Divide without breaking a sweat. This is one of the few places in Banff where you get above the treeline without committing to a full day hike, making it genuinely useful if weather or fitness level limits your options. You're looking at 2,100 vertical meters of elevation gain handled by the cable car in about 15 minutes.
At the summit, walk the alpine meadows at 2,455 meters, spot marmots and pikas among the wildflowers (July and August are peak bloom), and pick out the peaks around Lake Louise on clear days. A small lodge at the top serves food and hot drinks. The gondola runs through fall and early summer too, offering different perspectives depending on snow coverage and season.
Go in late morning on a weekday to dodge the weekend crowds that clog the parking lot. September offers the best balance of accessible weather and fewer families. The trade-off: if clouds roll in, your view disappears fast, so check the forecast before making the drive up Sunshine Access Road. This works best if you want alpine scenery without the commitment of a serious hike.
