You don't need a four-hour hike to see what made Banff famous. Bow Falls drops 40 metres over a limestone ridge where the Bow River curves sharply beneath Mount Cory. It's the view that appears on countless postcards, and you can reach it in ten minutes from the Banff town centre. The waterfall powers the Banff Hydro Station, so you're watching both nature and engineering at work.
Walk the paved path from the parking area to reach two distinct viewpoints. The lower platform gets you close to the mist and roar of the falls. The upper platform, across the bridge, gives you the angle you've seen in photographs. In spring, snowmelt swells the volume dramatically. By August, it's noticeably thinner but still impressive.
Go early or visit between October and April to avoid crowds. The summer peak transforms this into a congested tourist checkpoint where you'll wait for photos. The real trade-off is that the short walk attracts everyone with thirty minutes to spare, so solitude isn't guaranteed. This works best as your first stop in Banff, not your main event.
