The Buffalo Nations Luxton Museum sits on the bank of the Bow River in a log building that has housed the collection since 1952. The museum is dedicated to the history, culture, and traditions of the Plains peoples of the Canadian Rockies including the Stoney Nakoda, the Blackfoot Confederacy, the Tsuu T'ina Nation, and the Cree.
The exhibits cover traditional life, ceremonial practice, the impact of the fur trade and settlement, and the ongoing relationship between Indigenous nations and the land that became Banff National Park. The collection includes artifacts, regalia, and interpretive materials that provide a perspective on the Rockies that the natural history exhibits in the park often omit.
Worth visiting before you spend significant time in the backcountry. The museum is small and can be completed in under an hour but the density of the material rewards taking it slowly.
