The Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies on Bear Street holds the most comprehensive archive of mountain west history, art, and culture in Canada. The permanent collection covers over 100 years of life in the Canadian Rockies with a particular strength in early mountaineering history, Indigenous culture, and natural history photography.
The heritage homes on the grounds include the original Whyte family residence and provide context for understanding how early Banff was shaped by the people who chose to stay and build here rather than pass through. Peter Whyte and Catharine Robb Whyte, whose estate founded the museum, were both significant painters and the collection of their work alone is worth the entrance fee.
Allow two hours minimum. The rotating exhibitions tend to be thoughtfully curated and change frequently enough to reward multiple visits. The gift shop has the best selection of Canadian Rockies natural history and mountaineering literature in Banff.
